What Customers Say About The Dog's Mind: Understanding Your Dog's Behavior:

Add to this, it's written by a Vet.The book will open a topic and then break it down, i.e. First of all, if you're looking for a dog training book, this is a good background book or companion but it is NOT a book about training, it is a book about what makes dogs tick. Some parts of the book, specifically the early chapters spent considerable time on more scientific topics and information which the general reader may find challenging but if you survive that, the ramainder of the book offers a very clinical and uncompassionate look at dogs as a creature and the results of the various research efforts that have occurred around the world to help explain them. Drives. The book avoids picking sides in the "Holistic" vs "Non-Holistic" training camps and focuses more on the result of in depth research conducted by various institutions which is what I really liked about it. Instead of giving me another version of a perspective I didn't agree with, the laid the facts out so I could draw my own conclusions. Food Drive, Prey Drive, Defense Drive, etc but doesn't discuss how to utilize these drives (Since it's not a book on training) so again, it will help you understand the components of the dog, show you supporting research and evidence but you'll have to get some other books to see how they're utilized. If you actually want to understand why throwing a squeak toy through your legs (Common Holistic technique for training dogs to come) teaches aggression, look at "Der Schultzhund" the translated version. explaining how to use PREY drives to train attack dogs (Squeak).

Fogle uses a lot of references for everything he says, in addition to his own conclusions and personal experiences. I got this book after reading Cesar Millan's books, who recommends this book a lot. I got a sheltie puppy a few months ago, and even before that, I started reading as many books as I could about breeds, raising and dog behavior. Very nice book for those who are still experiencing the difficulties of their first dog, and for those who already are experienced but want to understand him better. When you read it, you can notice its influence in Cesar's way. It's written in a easy-to-understand language, but not simplistic. For me, only negative point is black-and-white, with drawings instead of pictures, and a publishing date of 1992, making it hard to find his references. But still a book which proves its value when you see in practice what you've read.

I expected this book to be a little outdated because of its age, and it was. This book would be better for someone who doesn't know much about dog behavior--and I would recommend skipping the chapter on the biology of the dog's brain. many of the ideas he states have since been proven wrong, such as the fact that all dogs see only in black and white. He did have some good information and thoughts on dog behavior and way of thinking, which is why I gave the book four stars. I learned a few interesting tidbits, but after working with dogs for several years now and studying them extensively, I found this book contained little I did not know. Recommended for beginning and intermediate dog handlers and owners, this book has the basics and a little more, but I would not consider it an exhaustive reference on dog behavior.
